Contrary Me

When I was little I wanted to know

Why the years passed so very slow.

Now I'm an adult, as they flash past

I want to know why they don't last.

The Gloomy Tortoise

A tortoise called Dorcas thought life ludicrous.

Carrying his own sarcophagus

His life felt endlessly posthumous.

I Really Do Not Mind the Zoo

I really do not mind the zoo.

I hate bars of course, but still, it's true

We're all fed regularly at the zoo.

Sometimes the penguins would like to go

To visit friends out in the snow.

The polar bears say it would be nice

To catch a view of polar ice.

But I think they're wrong. So would you,

If you got fed regularly at the zoo.

The lions say they would prefer their meat

Half-cooked by the savanna's heat.

But do they really know? Would you,

If you only ever ate at the zoo?

The cobra and the crocodile,

The alligator and the viper too

Say there's far better food outside.

But how do they know that's really true,

When they've never eaten outside the zoo?

I really do not mind the zoo.

I have my lunch there every day.

Sausage. Peas. Chips. A cup of tea.

At night I lock up, then go away

And leave the animals to dream

Of banquets that might have been.

Still, I don't feel bad. Would you,

If you ate regularly at the zoo?
